FR= OM THE SUPERINTENDENTWhen you come to visit our school buildings in B= runing and Davenport, please take notice of the great work that the summer = employees (Mary Houser, Christina Wagner, Jim Hogeland, Amanda Barney, Mari= ssa Brown, and Berdon Pederson, Georgeann Scholes, Michelle Sybrant, Erika = Schroeder, respectively) and the workers we brought in for special projects= accomplished. In the Bruning building, besides the usual painting, cleanin= g, and carpet work, we finished work in the gym, painted the new mascot on = the gym floor (thanks Mrs. Lubben!), lowered the ceiling in the hallway lea= ding to the music room, and constructed a shelter for the vans. In Davenpor= t, we replaced tile in the hallway, made improvements to the visitors’= ; locker rooms, tore down the crow’s nest and made other improvements= including a new hydrant, and expanded the approach into the south parking = lot.

BUS ACQUISITION:  In June, the Unified Board of Educa= tion approved the purchase of a VanHool coach bus for activities. They took= into consideration four factors when they made the decision to purchase th= e VanHool coach rather than a traditional yellow bus.  First, the comp= arative value between the VanHool coach bus and a yellow school bus. The co= st of a new yellow school bus large enough to seat the student athletes tha= t we expect to transport on the bus, with under storage, would be $140,000 = new. This is $10,000 more than what we paid for the VanHool coach. In addit= ion, the return value on a VanHool coach is much higher than the yellow sch= ool bus. Depreciation on yellow school buses is such that in ten years, a y= ellow school bus is worth virtually nothing for trade-in value.  VanHo= ol coach buses purchased 15 years ago are still worth between $40,000 and $= 50,000. The VanHool coach is built to run for 1,000,000 miles, much longer = than a regular school bus. When we purchased the VanHool, it had approximat= ely 325,000 miles on it. Furthermore, the board determined that the VanHool= coach would cut down on the number of vehicles the district had on the roa= d. Oftentimes, activity trips would require the district to use more than t= he bus to transport uniforms, band instruments, and other equipment associa= ted with sports and activities. With the under storage in the VanHool coach= , we are able to carry everything we need on trips so there will be no need= for extra vehicles.

Second, t= he board felt the purchase was an excellent way to build a bond between the= students in the two districts. The camaraderie that is forged after a game= , reviewing the game, sharing interests, building friendships is important = for cohesiveness of a team.

Third, th= e ride in the VanHool is much more comfortable than in the yellow school bu= s. In the yellow school bus, the seats are bench-style seats that hold 2 st= udents. Anyone who has ever ridden in a yellow school bus knows the ride is= not smooth nor is it comfortable. In the VanHool, students have individual= seats. The travel experience is much better, smoother, and more comfortabl= e with controlled AC/Heating. Students are more rested due to the comfortab= le traveling conditions found with the VanHool. This is important for the s= tudents prior to a game so they are not as tired from the trip to put forth= their best effort.

Fourth, t= he Unified Board considered the VanHool to be an investment in the future w= ith Shickley. The bus is a symbol of our commitment to the cooperative arra= ngement with Shickley and our commitment to a long-term relationship betwee= n the two districts. Shickley did not help in the purchase of the VanHool, = but it will pay a share of the operating expenses.  As for our purchas= e of the bus, we budget money for bus purchases so we did not have to incre= ase the budget or change the budget to buy the bus. Moreover, this purchase= won’t increase the budget for the 2010-2011 year.

The purch= ase of the VanHool coach bus benefited all of our students in the Bruning-D= avenport USD. The board and the administration expect the bus to be an asse= t to the District for years to come.

PARENT NOTIFICATION SYSTEM: = ; This year Bruning-Davenport USD is = using a different parent notification system. Global Connect is the vendor = for the system. The system allows us to record our own messages that will a= lso appear in email messages. We opted not to use text messages due to the = extra cost that might be incurred by our patrons. The system uses phone num= bers in our student management system, PowerSchool. We used the system to c= ommunicate to our patrons regarding an activity Tuesday night. If your phon= e registered a call from our district number, 402-364-2225, it was undoubte= dly this call. We hope that this system will give us the kind of service th= at allows us to get the messages out in a timely manner and using voice mes= sages that are easily understood.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL:  Another school year is off and runn= ing at Bruning-Davenport USD.  I would like to take this opportunity t= o welcome the students, parents, staff, and patrons back for another year o= f school.  Our students are already busy with their activities, sports= , and academics.  We kick off our sports seasons with Shickley Public = Schools with Varsity Volleyball at a Triangular in Hampton on September 2, = and Varsity Football at Heartland on September 3.   Our JH Volley= ball begins at Shickley vs. Exeter-Milligan on September 2 and the JH Footb= all team will open up at Shickley vs. Silver Lake on September 13.  Th= e band will have their first action at the State Fair, now in Grand Island,= September 2.  A map of the fairgrounds and the route for the marching= bands is included in this newsletter.  Please keep a close eye on the= bulletin and the schedule to ensure you make it to as many activities as p= ossible to support our students.

In looking ahead, we will have school pictures o= n September 1 in both buildings, beginning at 8:00 a.m. in Bruning, and app= roximately 10:00 a.m. in Davenport.   Please keep in mind that th= e students will not have school on September 6, in observance of Labor Day.=   Enjoy the long weekend because things will begin to get very hectic = with all of our activities after the break.

The students will be involved in many activities= in the classroom as the school year gets going.  We will have DIBELS = testing beginning in Bruning with the K-1 grades on August 31, and then on = September 1 in Davenport for the 2-6 grades.  We will also have STAR t= esting for grades 1-5  from September 7-10.  Our standardized tes= ting will take place towards the end of the month of September and the firs= t week of October with the MAP testing.

I look forward to getting the school year off to= a good start and look forward to working with the students, staff, and pat= rons of the district.  Make an effort to come out and support our stud= ents in the numerous activities that they are involved in during the school= year.

Child FindChild Find is a continuous process = of public awareness activities, screening and evaluation designed to locate, identify,= and refer as early as possible all young children with disabilitie= s and their families who are in need of Early Intervention Program (Part C)= or Preschool Special Education (Part B/619) services of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Bruning-Davenport USD will hold a child find mee= ting in the near future.

To receiv= e Early Intervention Program or Special Education, children must meet eligi= bility guidelines according to the IDEA. States have different eligibility = guidelines for their Early Intervention Program and Special Education servi= ces. In addition to children with disabilities, some states have elected to= provide early intervention services for infants and toddlers who are at ri= sk of developmental delay and their families. For information on the defini= tion of disability under IDEA and eligibility criteria for early interventi= on in your state, contact your state's Part C coordinator at http://www.nectac.org/contact/Ptccoord.asp.

NeSA-R REPORTS:  By August 25th, the Commissioner of Education Roger Breed will have released the= NeSA-R (reading test) results to the media. NeSA stands for Nebraska State= Accountability and it replaced the STARS assessment system. Bruning-Davenp= ort USD students in grades 3-8 and 11 took the NeSA-R in April 2010. The re= sults will provide a first-year baseline data point. The data will be used = in conjunction with other assessments to continue work on the districts con= tinuous improvement goals. Parents will receive a report on their own child= or children after August 25th.

Arrival TimesParents, please remember that child= ren who reside in the community in which their attendance site is located s= hould not be sent to the school before 8 AM. This is a potential safety iss= ue for the district as we may not always have staff that can monitor the st= udents. By 8 AM we have staff in the building that is available to supervis= e the children. Unless the student has made an appointment with the teacher= and he or she will be responsible for that student, please try to keep the= students at home until 8 AM. Your help and consideration are much apprecia= ted.

SPI:  The Bruning-Davenport Storm Parent Involvement Group sponsored an Eleme= ntary Open House the evening of August 16 at both the Bruning and Davenport= buildings.  Over 40 families attended and were given the opportunity = to see their students’ classrooms and visit with teachers.  The = SPI group would like to thank those of you who supported the Open House.&nb= sp; An upcoming planning meeting for SPI will be held September 14, 2010, a= t 6:00pm in Bruning.  We would like to encourage all parents to become= involved with our school’s Parent Involvement Group.
